Safe Sports & Physical Activity Facilities for Campus Return

Sports facilities - locker rooms, gyms, courts - are frequently overlooked yet can rapidly become zones of contagion due to confined spaces and high-contact surfaces.
Picture athletes squeezed into locker rooms, towels tossed on benches, equipment shared without cleaning, and fans lingering in poorly ventilated stands.
In such conditions, infection can leap between individuals - creating outbreaks with institutional consequences.
Adopt safety measures immediately: limit locker room use and promote gear storage individually.
Increase HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and add HEPA/UV (High efficiency particulate – air) filter/Ultra Violet light units where possible.
Disinfect equipment between uses.
Shift activities outdoors when feasible.
Stagger practice times to reduce crowding.
Mark one-way traffic flows inside facilities and install sanitizer stations at every entry/exit.
Train coaches and facility staff to enforce cleaning, distancing, and mask guidelines.

These steps turn athletic spaces into managed environments where physical activity - and campus spirit - can return without compromising health.
