Benchmarking: A Powerful Tool for Growth and Innovation in Higher Education

One of the most effective ways to strengthen quality in higher education is through benchmarking.

Benchmarking involves comparing your institution's policies, processes, and performance with those of leading peer institutions to identify best practices, close performance gaps, and drive continuous improvement.

Rather than viewing benchmarking as competition, institutions should embrace it as a learning opportunity.

By studying how high-performing universities enhance student success, improve teaching and learning, streamline administrative processes, or strengthen research output, institutions can adapt proven strategies to meet their own unique context and goals.

A notable example is the University of South Australia (UniSA), which benchmarked its student support services and graduate employability initiatives against leading Australian and international universities (Student Success guidance document at UNiSA - chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://i.unisa.edu.au/contentassets/60fcdda3cc344a38a504d1b055600fd8/students_deck_web.pdf).

On page 12 of this Student Success guidance document, the UNiSA member of staff enclosed in a hologram, chatting with students, one of whom is checking something on her laptop, is creative.

By adopting evidence-based practices and continuously measuring outcomes, UniSA enhanced the student experience and improved graduate employment outcomes, strengthening its reputation as a high-quality institution.

Effective benchmarking is not about copying another institution.

It is about understanding what works, why it works, and how those lessons can be adapted to foster innovation and sustainable excellence within your own institution.
